In town
Deschutes River
Float, paddle, or walk the river trail. Summer floats through town are a Bend ritual; the rest of the year the path still works for an easy outing.
About 30 minutes
Mt. Bachelor
Ski and ride in winter; lift-access hiking and scenic days in summer. Check conditions before you go — mountain weather turns quickly.
In town
Pilot Butte
A short hike or drive to the summit for a 360° look at Bend, the Sisters, and Bachelor. Sunrise and sunset are the crowded, worthwhile hours.

Smith Rock State Park
Cliffs, river canyon, and Misery Ridge just north of town in Terrebonne. Go early, carry water, and stay on trail — this is real desert heat in summer.
10–30 minutes
Trails west of town
Phil’s Trail, Tumalo Falls, and the Cascade Lakes Highway network give you dirt under the tires and waterfalls in the trees. Trailheads fill up on weekends.
45–90 minutes, seasonal
Cascade Lakes
Sparks, Elk, and neighboring lakes sit under Broken Top and the Sisters. The highway is often snow-closed late fall through spring — check before you drive.

Bend breweries
Bend’s ale trail is real and walkable if you pick a neighborhood. Designate a driver, eat first, and treat it as a few stops — not a checklist to finish.
